5 Ways AI can help you discover your career path

Hey there,

Back in 2019, I was lost in my career. I had a decent paycheck but something felt off—I wasn't sure if I was on the right path.

I started Googling things like "What job is right for people with my experience?" and "Best careers for people who like problem solving." All I got was generic answers that didn't help at all.

I wanted real answers.

  • A job that actually aligned with what I enjoyed.
  • A job where I can learn and earn more to live the life I want.
  • A way to know if a career felt right before investing time into it.
  • A clear plan to transition smoothly without starting over from scratch.

Now in 2025, with AI, everything has changed. What took me months of trial and error can now have first draft in less than 60 minutes with the right approach and prompts.

I'm going to walk you through a 5-step process that could literally change how much you will learn and earn in years to come. The whole process will take you about 45-60 minutes to implement, but considering it could mean the difference between a staying stuck at your current salary or breaking into six figures, I'd say it's worth the investment.

You can either scroll past this email and keep doing what you've been doing... or save it, block off an hour this weekend, and give it a serious go. Your choice.

Here's how you can use AI tools to get started now...

Step #1: Define your career criteria (or AI can't help you)

AI is only as good as the input you give it. Instead of asking, "What job should I do?" get clear on what actually matters to you. Think about:

  • The kind of work you actually enjoy (creative, analytical, fast-paced, independent, etc.)
  • Your salary expectations (aim high—six figures is achievable with the right positioning!)
  • High-growth industries you're curious about (fintech, medtech, cybersecurity)
  • Whether you love structure or prefer variety
Prompt: "Act as a career advisor. I love problem-solving, hate repetitive tasks, and want to earn at least $150K. I prefer working independently and don't enjoy sales. What career paths in high-growth industries align with this? Give the output in a table view so it's easy to review"

I did the exercise using $200 ChatGPT Pro model vs free Deepseek.

Step #2: Look for patterns in what you've enjoyed or hated before

Ok now you have a list of roles it's time to remove the options based on your past experiences. Back when I felt lost in my career, I realized I was too focused on job titles instead of looking at the bigger picture—what I actually enjoyed about my past work.

We often make career moves based on external factors (what's trending, what pays well). That's a great first step to move in the right direction. But it's important that you narrow down your options from understanding what has already made you happy—or miserable—in past roles.

AI can help you spot trends you might not even see yourself.

Prompt: Here are three jobs I've had and what I liked/disliked about each. Can you find common themes and suggest top 3 careers options from the above list that fit my pattern of strengths? Create a table view so I can review all 3 options at glance.

You will get far better output when you spend at least 5 minutes to write down all the things you liked and disliked in the past role.

It doesn't need to be detailed here is my example Enterprise Account Executive Liked

Liked

  • Hiring and training the BDR team to grow the region
  • Selling software products in a consultative manner to C level
  • Constantly pushed to learn new skills as demand grew in PAM space
  • Designing the sales operations and lead flow (inbound and outbound)

Disliked

  • High admin tasks that takes away time to build relationship
  • Complex approval process in selling to public sector

Step #3 Discover hidden companies that you've never considered

When I first started thinking about a career change, I kept looking at safe, obvious options—roles that seemed like the logical next step. I was too stuck in my mind to only look for roles in large known tech companies like Google, Microsoft etc.

Then I focused on high growth Privilege Access Management industry and landed a role in company which 20x their revenue in just 12 months and that meant high earnings for me - small company but big payoff for me.

Sometimes, we just need to widen our lens and see opportunities in high-growth industries we never considered. The crazy part is the best opportunities are often the ones we don't know exist yet.

ChatGPT can help you explore beyond the usual career lists by identifying:

  • Smaller companies that are in high growth industry
  • Alternative paths (freelance, consulting, niche roles, etc.) e.g. AI consultants in 2025
Prompt: List 5 fast-growing, lesser-known UK tech companies likely hiring for roles like Cloud Solutions Architect, Cybersecurity Consultant, or Technical Product Manager. Summarize each company's focus, growth indicators, and relevant openings in a tabular format.

Step #4 Test your interest before making a career move

ack in 2019 before jumping into tech sales I spent 6 months - learning and testing my assumption what it would be like to work in tech sales but now you can spend weeks instead of months to do that.

The last thing you want is to be super excited about a job… make all the changes only to realize it wasn't for you? Testing before can save months of wasted effort and a lot of frustration.

Plus you can show interviews you have put in effort and have solid reason to make this move.

Prompt 1: "I'm considering becoming a cybersecurity consultant in an AI company. Can you give me a small challenge that simulates the type of problems I'd solve daily?"
Prompt 2: "Pretend you're a cybersecurity consultant in an AI company in a high-growth startup. I'm considering this career—what are the biggest misconceptions?"

Step #5 Identify skill gaps & build a plan to pivot

Once you've narrowed down your career options, the next big question is: "Do I actually have the skills for this?"

A lot of people get stuck here and they disqualify themselves. But here's the thing: most career pivots don't require starting from scratch. AI can help you bridge the gap faster by creating a step-by-step learning plan.

Prompt: "Here is my CV - compare my current skills and experience with what's needed for a career as a cybersecurity consultant. What's my biggest gap? Create a 3-month learning plan to help me position myself as a cybersecurity consultant in a high-growth startup."

The difference between feeling stuck in a job and actually making a change is having a clear roadmap. AI can help you build one that gets you to high income career faster.

AI Won't Choose Your Career—But It Can Make the Process 10x Smarter

I wish I had tools like ChatGPT when I was figuring out my own career. It won't make the decision for you, but it can help you:

  • Test job fit before committing
  • Learn new skills with a structured plan
  • See patterns in your strengths and experiences
  • Position yourself as the perfect solution to specific problems
  • Uncover careers in high-growth industries you never considered

If you've been stuck, frustrated, or unsure what's next - block 60 minutes to try these prompts and see it for yourself.

Yes you will have to work for it.

Yes it will take extra time.

But the question is: are you happy to continue in a career where you know you cannot grow and earn what you deserve, or are you ready to take action now and decide what's right for your future?
